Book Review: Beautifully Unique Sparkleponies by Chris Kluwe

Rating: 4.5 / 5

With Beautifully Unique Sparkleponies, it is difficult to write a summary; there is no theme or common thread running through each essay, except that they culminate to reveal Chris Kluwe’s mind and intelligence. Kluwe is an NFL punter who has gained fame (and possibly some notoriety) for being outspoken with his opinions, most notably for supporting same sex marriage and eviscerating Maryland state delegate Emmet Burns on his view of gay marriage, and the right to free speech (by the way, if you haven’t read that open letter, you are missing out).

Chris Kluwe is incredibly intelligent.  Enough can’t be said about that, especially in today’s society, where celebrities and athletes have a huge platform and presence, and are, for the most part, stupid. You don’t have to agree with all of Kluwe’s opinions to appreciate the beauty of his words and the message he conveys.  If I could write half as well as he does, I’d consider myself a success.

Kluwe is known for his strategic use of colorful language, and I use the word ‘strategic’ because it is exactly that; instead of throwing curse words out randomly because it is now part of the everyday vernacular, Kluwe uses choice words to emphasize a point.  It actually enhances his message, which is both humorous and effective. The best part about all of this is seeing someone espouse the concepts of empathy, sincerity, and treating people with kindness and understanding. The fact that he is articulate, logical, and brutally honest in his arguments hopefully will inspire a younger generation to be more intelligent than  and strive for more than reality show stardom.
